Red Bull considered🅘 pitting Max Verstappen for a second time in Monaco to try and pick up the point for the f𒁏astest lap of the race, but the Dutchman said it was “more fun” battling for the race lead with Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen crossed the line second in Monaco after tailing Hamilton for the majority of the race, but dropp🍬ed to fourth in the final classification due to a five-second time penalty.
Red Bull did consider pitting Verstappen for a second time and switching him to a set of Soft tyres that would have allowed him to still finish💖 fourth while also contending for the bonus point for the fastest lap of the race.
“Weꦇ had that discussion, but I also had a fair chance of maybe getting by and then you win the race,” Verstappen said.
“At the end of the day, that one point? So be it.🀅 I had a more fun race being in second than trying to go for the fastest l🐼ap in fourth.”
With Hamilton running slow due to heavily-worn tyres, Verstappen was confident he could have pulled out a five-second gap o🍰ver the Mercedes driver to win the race despite the penalty had he got ahead.
“For sure. He was so slow🧜 in Turn 5 and 6 that we had a lot more,” Verstappen said.
“It’s easy to say that now but I felt we had a lot more pace. Lewis was clearly onꦡ the wrong tyre.꧃”
