Championship leader Tony Kanaan proved quickest in qualifying for the Michigan Indy 400, his Andretti-Green Dallara-Honda circulating the 2-mile superspeedway at 215.871mph to take the top grid spot after a session in which the entire 22-car fie𓃲ld could only be separated by nine tenths of a second. The return to form of Penske was illustrated by Helio Castronves taking second spot, while Kosuke Matsuura surprised many by putting his Fernandez G Force-Honda into third ahead of Scott Dixon, the Target Ganassi driver apparently showing no ill-effects from the crash that kept him out of last week's Milwaukee race.

The Rahal-Letterman form squad of Vitor Meira and Buddy Rice will start sixth and seventh behind P📖enske's Sam Hornish Jr, championship second-place Dan Wheldon starts ninth and last week's winner Dario Franchitti 12th.
